Our Mission

Strengthening the voices of Indiana students through speech and debate education

Our Vision

  • ISSDA works with administrators and boards to help create new teams, coaches, and leaders in Indiana schools.

  • ISSDA will study the future needs of students and will make decisions based on their needs at least a decade in the future.

  • ISSDA offers high quality professional development that goes throughout the year.

  • ISSDA will work to develop partnerships with college and university teams.

  • ISSDA will engage parents to understand quality judging and appreciate the talent their children have.

  • ISSDA will continuously evaluate their events to ensure strong participation.

Our Core Values

  • Empowerment: We teach academic speech and Debate Skills so students find their voice, enrich their lives and prepare students for college and careers.

  • Communication: We teach competition speech and debate skills  such as setting goals, working hard, practicing, developing personal growth and good sportsmanship.

  • Diversity & Inclusion: Celebrate Diversity and Inclusion

  • Innovative Thinking: We promote 21st century skills like critical thinking, creativity, curiosity, problem solving, collaboration, and technological skills.

  • Integrity: We practice open and honest communication, integrity, collegiality and respect for all involved.

  • Teaching & Learning: We provide opportunities for all schools and encourage their involvement by mentoring their coaches.

The Indiana Schools Speech and Debate Association began in 1928 as the Indiana State Debating League. In 1943 the name was changed to the Indiana High School Forensics Association when Speech events were added to the season of competitions.

In 2021 member schools voted to change the name of the organization to the Indiana Schools Speech & Debate Association. Membership is open to any Middle or High School in the state of Indiana.
